Please join us for our North African wine dinner
on Thursday, August 13th.

The roots to North African cuisine can be traced back more than 2000 years.
Over several centuries, traders, travelers, invaders, migrants and immigrants have all influenced the cuisine of North Africa, which is as diverse as the land, its people and its history. The aromatic variety of spices, like saffron, nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger and cloves, contribute to the culinary culture of North Africa. This dinner will highlight some traditional flavors from the region.

Prepared by Chef Ray Wyatt, our five course dinner features the finest in gourmet cuisine, freshest seasonal ingredients, and exquisite wines expertly paired to each course.

Aperitif and tours of the Inn offered one half hour before dinner.

First course served at 6:30pm.

rossettibedchamber

This month’s Room Highlight is our Christina Rossetti Bedchamber. This fabric-draped bedchamber features feminine tones of twilight blue silk, misty taupe and copper-brown in a stunning space that celebrates Christina Rossetti’s Italian roots and her preoccupation with love and world beauty. The beautiful french canopy bed is the oldest in the home, originally from the 16oo’s. Because it is from such an earlier time, the bed is only a full-size and we recommend that no one over 5′10″ stay in the room because it is quite short. No queen or king-size beds back then!  This bedchamber also has a lovely carved wooden shelve and cupboard. It is perfect for the “travel-sized” couple or single woman looking to get away.

The cozy bath features an intimate , drapery-enclosed corner bath area with a whirlpool soaking tub,  and beautifully carved Italian mirror. This bedchamber is filled with dreamy romance.

Sunday, July 26th

Final Day of Lumberjack Days!

grandparadeToday starts off with the Ecumenical Church Service – Community Pancake Breakfast held in Pioneer Park from 7:30-11:00am. After eating some tasting pancakes, head out to the Old Athletic Field and watch authentic 1860’s baseball! See how the game was meant to be played as the Washington County Historical Society presents a 1860 vintage base ball exhibition, including 3 games. The games are played by 1860 rules of base ball [two words back then] and uniforms of that era are worn. Some interesting rules include the batter [called the striker] is out if the ball is caught on the fly or first bounce; there is no sliding, no swearing, and no sweating — especially if ladies are present. For more information, check out this link: Vintage Baseball

The STIHL Dogs & Logs Championships is back today as well. The Ironjack Endurance Finals as well as the DockDogs Big Air competition will be held at noon with the Finals held at 2:00pm. My personal favorite of the competitions is the STIHL Dogs & Logs Relay Races where 3 dogs and 2 lumberjacks team up in head to head relays! The relay races begin at 3:30pm at the north end of Lowell Park.

Don’t forget the Lumberjack Days ‘09 Grand Parade! With over 150 units, this is a fantastic parade to watch and the whole family will love it! Bystanders beware, parade watchers are known to get hit with water balloons and squirt guns!

The Lumberjack Days ‘o9 Music Spectacular Night IV begins with the Stillwater Area High School Jazz Band kicking off the award ceremonies. Awards will be given out to the winners of Joseph’s Pie Baking Contest, Cribbage Tournament, Chess Tournament, Karate and Treasure Hunt!

Lumberjack Days ‘09 finishes with a bang with the band Zed Leppelin performing on the floating stage. After the band finishes, the Thunder in the Valley XIII Fireworks Finale will begin! Thunder in the Valley is one of the largest musically choreographed fireworks shows in the United States, so don’t miss out!

jim kynderberg

The Kitchen, a new restaurant in Stillwater, is located in the Grand Garage space that was formerly Stones Restaurant. The Kitchen was recently featured in the Small Bites section St. Paul Pioneer Press on Thursday. Restaurant critic Kathie Jenkins states that The Kitchen’s great asset is the patio. When Stone’s restaurant closed, locals mourned the closing of the most beautiful patio in town. Since The Kitchen opened in that space last week, people are already looking to dine outside. The new owners, Jim Kyndberg chef/owner of the former Bayport Cookery, and Erick Harcey and Ben Hiza, who also run Victory 44 in Minneapolis, moved in without changing much of anything. As a matter of fact, the old Stone’s sign was still up opening week.

According to Jenkins, Jim Kyndberg’s menu covers all the bases – beef tartare, shrimp cocktail, raw oysters, calamari, burgers, steak, fish and mac ‘n’ cheese. However, she does state that many of the dishes are too heavy for this time of year. Overall though, The Kitchen is a sociable place with decent food, and it will have a crowd soon. For the rest of the summer, you’ll need good luck to score a seat on the patio.
