whoozakooza

I just heard that ArtReach Alliance and Cirque Du Soleil have partnered to bring the “Whooza Kooza” crew to Stillwater to announce the arrival of KOOZA! The Whooza Kooza crew are a team of promotional performers who will be playing and clowning their way into the hearts of those who live in and visit Stillwater to celebrate the coming of their new touring show to Minnesota. The Kooza Crew will be clowning around and interacting with visitors in Lowell Park this Friday, July 3rd from 5:00-7:00pm. They will pull in audience members to participate in the performance and take photos, which are available online for free! You can see photos of the Whooza Kooza’s recent visits at www.whoozakooza.com/photo.

PLUS: If you visit with the Whooza Kooza Crew, you get 30% off your KOOZA tickets! Having been to several Cirque Du Soleil performances, I can tell you that this is a great deal and it will be a fantastic show. Cirque Du Soleil has never failed to amaze me.

KOOZA is a story of The Innocent, a melancholy loner in search of his place in the world.  The Innocent’s journey brings him into contact with a variety of strange and comic characters such as the King, the Trickster, the Pickpocket, and the Obnoxious Tourist with his Bad Dog. The show explores themes of fear, identity, recognition and power through smiles, laughter and bold slapstick humor. KOOZA will surprise, thrill and chill you!

It brings Cirque Du Soleil back to the source by combining two circus traditions – acrobatic performance and the art of clowning. The show will wow you with acts that challenge the senses and keep your pulse pounding. Tickets for the KOOZA show are now on sale online! You don’t want to miss it!

Leo’s Grill & Malt Shop is located right on Main St. in downtown Stillwater and was recently featured in the St. Paul Pioneer Press. New owners Cory & Naashom Buettner bought the malt & grill shop that used to be called Lily’s, and also Darla’s, about nine months ago. Cory was a former general manager at Michael’s frozen custard in Madison, Wisconsin. When he and his wife moved to Stillwater, they started looking at spaces where they could sell frozen custard. His father, Leo, was their inspiration for buying Lily’s. He and his father had stopped in for lunch one day and his father said that if the space ever became available, they should jump on it.

A month after his father passed away, Cory found out the owners were looking to sell. He snapped it up and named it Leo’s after his father. The space is too small to add frozen custards, so they are sticking to burgers and malts. Cory recommends their “Mucho Leos” burger topped with spicy jalapenos and chipotle mayo as well as their Muddy Banana sundae which includes vanilla ice cream, hot fudge, Oreos, and sliced bananas for dessert.

We are starting a new feature on our blog today, Recipe of the Month! Each month we will post one of Chef Ray’s recipes for foods ranging from breakfasts to dinners to mouth-watering desserts! In honor of summer, this month’s Featured Recipe is Grilled Peaches with Mascarpone. We held a private cooking class today and this was on their menu! They absolutely loved it and said it was fun and easy to make!

Grilled Peaches with Mascarpone

This is a fantastic summer dessert. It is easy, tasty and the perfect end to a good grill out. Serve it with chilled Prosecco and it’s even better!

Ingredients:

Light Olive Oil

3 Firm But Ripe Peaches (Pitted & Quartered)

2 Tablespoons Sugar

2 Tablespoons Brandy

1 Tablespoon Fresh Lemon Juice

1/2 Cup Mascarpone Cheese (Room Temperature)

1/4 Teaspoon Vanilla Extract

3/4 Cup Dry White Wine

Place a grill pan over medium-high heat or prepare the barbecue (medium-high heat). Lightly brush the grill pan or rack with oil. Place the peaches on the grill pan or rack with oil. Place the peaches on the grill pan and do not move the peaches, otherwise you will not have those great grill marks. It takes about 2 to 3 minutes per side to get those grill marks. Grill the peaches until the grill marks are formed, slightly softened and heated through. (About 5 to 6 minutes total)

Meanwhile, stir the sugar, brandy, and lemon juice in a medium-size bowl to blend. Set the brandy mixture aside.

As soon as the peaches are ready, remove them from the grill and place them in a shallow baking dish. Top them with the brandy mixture, and toss to coat. Set aside for 15 minutes and allow to marinate, tossing occasionally.

Stir the mascarpone and vanilla in a small bowl to blend.

Divide the grilled peach mixture equally among 6 coupe dishes. Pour the wine over the peaches. Put a dollop of the mascarpone mixture atop the peaches and serve. You can also top the peaches off with sugared almonds if you so desire.

byronsuite

The Lord Byron Suite is by far the most regal of our rooms decorated in burgundy and gold. Fit for a king, this room features a queen-size four-poster bed originally from India circa 1850. The style of the bed is Anglo-Indian, which means that it was made by Indian craftsman in an Indian version of the English style. Among the other unique furnishings is a sleek American couch from the 1830-40s and a small, elaborately carved davenport desk reportedly built for a ship. The gas fireplace is also set in a period mantel. A step up to the bath reveals a large double whirlpool tub with underwater lights and cascading waterfall faucet, along with a stained glass window.

This second floor suite also features the Inn’s only private entrance off a small balcony sitting area overlooking the East gardens. It is the perfect place to sit and have your morning coffee or a glass of wine in the evening. Either way, staying in the Lord Byron Suite will make you feel like royalty.

Weekend Activities!

June 20, 2009

st-croix-valley

There are a lot of great activities and events happening this weekend! The White Pine Festival finishes up tomorrow. It is an interdisciplinary arts festival held each summer in the St. Croix Valley. The final performance will be from Miro Quartet and poet Matthea Harvey at 4:00pm in Trinity Lutheran Church here in Stillwater. Matthea Harvey was the winner of the prestigious 2009 Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award. He will be working together with the Miro Quartet interweaving music and poetry in three different ways and will feature the debut of a new multi-part work by Harvey.  The cost is $15/$10

Tomorrow also marks the last day of Theatre in the Rounds’ production of Agatha Christie’s “Unexpected Guest”. Their final performance will be a matinee at 2:00pm. After a dense fog forces his car off a remote road in Wales, a stranger finds his way to an isolated house – where he discovers a woman standing over the body of her husband, with a gun in her hand. In a daze, she confesses to the crime. But the unexpected guest is not convinced, and the estate is soon brimming with suspects, clues, and intrigue in one of Christie’s finest mysteries. You can experience this wonderful mystery from a whole new perspective with Theatre in the Round’s unique arena stage, where the audience surround the action. Its 246 seats are only seven rows deep, so no seat is more than 30 feet from center stage!

Monroe Crossing is playing at Festival Theatre tomorrow as well at 2:00pm. It is truly bluegrass at its very best, treat yourself to a high energy, instrumentally superb concert that you’ll never forget. With fiddle, mandolin, guitar, banjo and bass backed up with tight vocal harmonies, Monroe Crossing gets audiences smiling with the first notes. Join Monroe Crossing at the Festival Theatre in St. Croix Falls, WI. Tickets are $30.00 at the door.
